August 11, 2016 — John Oliver recently did a segment about journalism on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” and, as you should expect, it got a lot of attention in the journalism community. Oliver understands that we all are hurt when there aren’t enough journalists to watch over those in power, and he explains that in his funny, straight-on style. The segment ends with a spoof on the Oscar-winning movie “Spotlight.” You should check it out here if you haven’t already seen it, but I must warn you that it may leave you a little depressed about the industry. That’s OK as long as you understand that all is not lost.
Not all “journalists” appreciated Oliver’s take on the situation, though, and they wrote about it. They thought Oliver was too tough on the powerful people who control a lot of newspapers and media companies. They were wrong, of course, and Margaret Sullivan, media columnist for the Washington Post, let them know it. You can read her column here.
